Yamaha Ypg 635

Submitted by: Devin Hildebrand

It has been nicknamed the “portable grand piano” – the Yamaha YPG-635 takes the substance of a real piano and squeezes the feel, sound, and action into the body of a portable keyboard. Equipped with 88 keys of weighted graded hammer action, you’ll be taking the sounds a grand piano virtually anywhere you wish.

One of the top 10 best selling keyboards of 2010 on Amazon, and still close the top of the pack in 2011, the YPG-635 is already a trusted keyboard, and is well on its way to revolutionizing the idea of what kind of instrument most families will keep in their living room.

Aside from simulating a grand piano, this keyboard excels as an educational tool. The “Yamaha Education Suite” comes in the system. It includes 30 built-in songs and 70 more on a CD-ROM that are quick to begin playing and learning with. The songs are divided in different parts for the right and left hand. The education suite will also monitor your progress intelligently and you advance through three different lessons for each hand on each song, and learn in its included chord dictionary.

Also included is a built-in 6-track sequencer that makes recording swift and easy. This sequencer functions as a built-in multi-track recorder. Recording sessions is as easy as clicking a button. The keyboard is also easily compatible as a tool with DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) like Garageband, Logic, etc. for higher-level recording.

“Full Keyboard Mode” may be the most awesome feature of this keyboard. This mode, when enabled, transforms the keys to function just like a real piano. As keyboards normally require chords to be played on the left and melodies on the right, Full Keyboard Mode allows freedom across all keys just like a real piano. When this mode is used in conjunction with the accompaniment feature, the virtual band will follow along with the chords you play. This is a great feature, and really solidifies how the Yamaha YPG-635 can imitate a grand piano.

A small drawback – the speakers can not reach a very loud volume. This is the downside most often cited in customer reviews. However, it can be remedied easily if there is a need. After all, this problem would only present itself if you use this keyboard in very loud settings such a band rehearsal or in a live gig setting. However, if this is your case, an amplifier will be required. If you only wish to use this keyboard for casual purposes, however, you should not have any problems.

All in all, this really is an EXCELLENT keyboard. Its most powerful strength lies in in its capability to essentially duplicate the sound and feel of a real grand piano. With the feature alongside its superb recording system and its excellent educational system, the YPG-635 is truly a great instrument for the paid price.

Alright, let’s recap by taking a look at the major pros and cons…

Pros:

Realistic sound and feel of a grand piano in affordable, compact form.

An education system that monitors your progress intellectually while you progress through lessons for each hand and 100 songs to learn.

Easy-to-use built in recording system AND easy compatibility with Garageband, Logic, etc. for higher level recording.

Cons:

Speakers lack loud volume appropriate for performances/rehearsals. An amplifier may be required for these settings.

Not really for those seeking many effects or psychedelic sounds – fairly straightforward sound.

So, if you are seeking a stable keyboard that sounds and feels like a real piano, excels at teaching, and is extremely affordable, the Yamaha YPG-635 is exactly what you need.
