What It Takes to Become an Accountant

Accountants keep track of a company’s earnings and spending. They may also prepare reports for taxes, stocks and other funds. There are four different types of accountants, but all of them have a similar nature: 1. Public accountants – These accountants may work for a company, but most of them own their own business. Management accountants – These accountants work for companies, and they help the company they work for keep track of their finances. 3. Internal auditors – These accountants make sure that the company’s taxes. They may also check records to make sure no one inside the company is stealing or wasting money. 4. Government accountants – These accountants work for the government. They perform tasks similar to a management accountant, but on a government scale. Education required. To get a job, accountants need to have a degree in accounting. Some companies only require an associate degree, but most require a bachelor’s degree. Many colleges offer accounting as a major, so it is not hard to get the proper education. The courses and exams deal with different issues that accountants will face. Most of the questions on the accounting exams deal with taxes, ROI, stocks, and charts. Accounting courses teach probability, statistics and analytics because accountants need to be skilled with various mathematic methods. Public accountants need to take a special test that results in certification. In addition, public accountants must also hold a state license for their profession. Skills required. Not everyone can be an accountant. Along with education, a person needs to have some other skills. Because of the job’s nature, accountants must be able to commit to their professions and possibly work more than 50 hours a week. They should also have solid problem solving and analytical skills, two things that many colleges can’t teach. If you are to be an accountant, you must be willing to solve tax problems, save the company money on spending costs and effectively communicate certain issues with your manager. Other information Accounting jobs are expected to grow faster than other jobs through until 2018. Accounting jobs that require special licensing will be easier to get. In 2008, the average salary for an accountant was $65,500. Most jobs for accounting are located in big cities because large corporations operate in them. Because of the positive outlook in accounting job growth, getting a job as an accountant, with the right education and skills, should be fairly easy.
